It's a new year and we have started Chapter 5 in Math- Addition. In this chapter, we present addition situations that represent adding to and putting together sets to find the sum- the total, or how many in all. Right now we are focusing on adding within the number 5. Next week we will move on to adding within 10. Students can represent addition through multiple ways, with objects, using fingers, mental images, drawings, acting out situations, verbal explanations and equations. The vocabulary covered in this chapter are: add, is equal to, plus, and pairs. In class we use many concrete objects to practice adding such as cubes, figurines, and counters. Experience modeling sums with concrete objects is an important part of learning to add. Children will rely less on models as they build an understanding of addition. Here is a website for students to practice their addition: www.softschools.com/math/addition/learning_addition_for_kids/ Check out some photos of the students working hard at addition! :)
