Congratulations Shaheen, Ali and Mohab, our first students to be able to read all the rainbow sight words! Hip Hip HOORAY!!
![]() We have started our next Unit and this domain will introduce students to the concept of weather. The students will learn that different regions of earth experience different characteristic weather patterns throughout the year. They will also learn that we can think about a year and the related weather pattern in terms of four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Students will learn why knowing about the weather is important, and how weather affects our day to day lives and activities. Students will have a further understanding of units of time and their relationship to one another: a day, week, month and a year. We will listen to a variety to texts, specifically nonfiction/informational read- alouds. We will be comparing the weather throughout the different seasons in the United States with the weather in Dubai. You can find some great educational videos about each season on ![]() Brain pop Jr, if you would like to visit www.casdubai.com
![]() Student-Led Conferences 101 What is a student-led conference? A student-led conference is an opportunity for students to share their learning with their parents in school for an allocated time. Students are encouraged to get dressed up in their finest clothing (pants and shirts for boys and smart dresses for girls). Who does the student-led conference involve? The student leads the discussion. The parent questions, listens and learns. The teacher is present and will be walking around, but will not be actively participating. How does the student-led conference take place? The student-led conference is held in the student’s classroom. It lasts for 20-30 minutes. The student-led conference can be carried out in the native language of the student and parent with the focus on understanding. The student leads the conference, explaining his/her learning to the parents. The parents’ role is to support and encourage the student as well as ask appropriate questions while the conference is taking place. (See suggestions below.) What is the purpose of the student-led conferences? o To promote home and school partnership o To increase the students’ responsibility for their learning and to promote reflection o To show progress being made o To encourage 3-way interaction o To provide an opportunity for parents to understand their child’s learning ![]() Dr. Marty Burns webinar on autism is a great source of the latest news on Autism research and interventions. "So just summarizing this then, autism spectrum disorders are neuro developmental problems but they're also poly genetic......Understanding that autism spectrum disorder is not caused by diet, it is not caused by vaccinations it is caused by genes that interfere with various aspects of development of the brain long before the baby is even born and in many cases, it looks like long before the brain even starts to develop." If interested you man watch the 7 minute video here: http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=BY2Df&m=3gJqYyeRTm6PmQg&b=jKZzRAKK5usFfPY29G3OVw I also found a great article about why its important to teach kids about autism, Here's a small excerpt from the article: "Why should you talk to your kids about autism? Because statistically speaking, your child knows at least one kid with autism and interacts with him or her on a daily basis. Because the more we talk to our kids about accepting and understanding differences, the less likely they are to bully other kids. Because when you talk to your kids about being accepting of the “quirky” kids in their class, you’re also teaching them to be accepting of other kinds of differences: skin colors, accents, clothing brands, religious beliefs, music preferences." www.babble.com/mom/autism-acceptance-month-10-things-i-wish-your-kids-knew-about-autism/ |
