![]() Currently in KG2B we are working on unit 7 called King and Queens. In this unit students have been listening to read-alouds about kings and queens and royal families. Students have been listening to both fiction and nonfiction selections which will build their understanding of the responsibilities, lifestyle, and customs associated with royalty throughout history. Living in Dubai, it is important students understand how this topic can also be related to the Royal family of Dubai. Students are able to explain who the Sheikh is, his responsiblities and who his son is the crown prince - Sheikh Hamdan. Throughout this unit students are learning new vocabulary words and the concept that many words have more than one meaning. If you are using Raz-kids at home you will see under the "My assignment section" I have assigned students some of the stories we have read in class to reinforce the topic. I know often times when parents ask their children what did you learn in school today, the common answer can be I don't remember. This is very normal, however to help you I have created a few questions you may ask your child to encourage conversation about all the things they learn in class. Describe what a King or Queen does? What does royal mean? What is a kingdom? What is a palace? Are there still Kings and Queens today? What are treasures? What is a crown prince? Who is the crown prince in Dubai? What does it mean to be merry? Can you give me an example? Most of all to help support your child's learning journey I encourage you to take time each night to read books. Reading to your child is the single most important thing you can do to encourage his or her literacy development.

![]() Last week we had Ms. Walters our school councelor stop by to teach us all an important lesson, Bucket filling. She read the story "Have You Filled A Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud. This heartwarming book encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express respect, kindness, appreciation, and love by filling other peoples invisible bucket. The bucket represents your mental and emotional self. We discussed ways we can fill each other’s buckets in KG2B. Children said by hugging, smiling, saying I love you, helping each other and sharing our toys. The children were then asked to write compliments on each other’s buckets. The responses were lovely, such as You Rock!, I love you, and you are the best! If you would like to reinforce or discuss the topic at home watch the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xegQUON65hk and discuss bucket filling. You may also check out the bucket filling website : www.bucketfillers101.com/faqs.php ![]() After our class trip to Ski Dubai, the students illustrated and labelled their own drawings of penguins and wrote all the facts about penguins that they learned. I was so impressed by all their work. When writing students are asked to focus on things such as finger spaces between words, starting their sentences with an uppercase letter and putting a full stop at the end of each sentence. You can see from some of the students work below that they have progressed so much since the beginning of the year! Yay KG2B! |
