Who needs Ms.sorcha?Love this time of year when all our hard work pays off and the classroom runs like a well oiled machine. So well in fact I have some stand in teachers. Tabatha and Sofia.S led the class with some phonics and skills carpet work this week. It is lovely to see how respectful all the children are of each other and how focused in their learning they are. I really enjoy teaching the Engage New York Skills Units this year https://www.engageny.org/resource/kindergarten-english-language-arts-skills-strand
and can see a lot of progress in both the children's reading and writing phonetic skills. They are nearly ready for grade one! Well done KG2C. Poor Olaf was melting in the sun and the only way to save him was to protect him from the sun in the shade. The children set to work designing and building a sun shelter to keep him cool. We took a step back and let them solve the problems that they found along the way, helping them to learn how to think critically. It also allowed for them to work in groups. We tested the shelters outside in the sun and one group Adam and Arin had the most successful shelter, with the least amount of melted water from poor Olat. way to go Adam and Arin! Thank you to the KG2C's parenst and students who made recycled outfits to bring to school on Thursday, they all looked great! We took an official vote and Sofia.G was the winner of the most creative outfit. Well done Sofia! We also used recycled goods to decorate our door. Student Led ConferencesThis week in KG2C was an exciting week with student led conferences. A time for the children to show you what we get up to inside the classroom. Thank you to all of you for attending and getting involved in our Kindergarten activities. I know the children loved having you here and challenging you to do what they do best! There might even be a picture of you loosing at Kahoot, check them out here: https://goo.gl/photos/9htAqb1D9qc52sXKA
2D and 3D Shapes![]() Math can be so much fun! We are learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes at the moment in KG2C. Hands on learning makes it all the more easy to remember in later years and problem solving means your child learns skills that they can really use. Check out some of the fun and challenging activities we’ve been getting up to here: https://goo.gl/photos/ni7wpxUfL4VuaHCG9 Building Beaver Dams The children were busy designing and building beaver dams this week during science. We have been discussing the needs of animals and the ways animals adapt to their environment. The beavers are a perfect example of a way animals change the environment to suit their needs. We extended this research by completing the STEM activity of engineering a small sized beaver dam. They worked in groups to choose which materials they thought would work best to stop the flow of water. Only one group were successful but the children had plenty of fun trying to problem solve. Check out the pictures and videos here: https://goo.gl/photos/iuBBQDLrBoaP5aoUA Sharjah AquariumTo follow on with our science unit plants and animals we took a trip to the Sharjah Aquarium. The children got to see what the UAE coral reef is made up of and also got to learn about the history of Dubai and famous pearl trade on Dhow boats. Have You Filled A Bucket? This week in KG2C Ms. Walters our school councilor stopped by to teach us all an important lesson, Bucket filling. She read the story Have You Filled A Bucket Today by Carol McCloud. This heartwarming book encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express respect, kindness, appreciation, and love by "filling buckets. We discussed ways we can fill each other’s buckets in KG2C. Children said by hugging, smiling, saying I love you, helping each other and sharing our toys. The children were then asked to write compliments on each other’s buckets. The responses were lovely, such as You Rock!, I love you, and you are the best! If you would like to reinforce or discuss the topic at home watch the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xegQUON65hk and discuss bucket filling. CVC Words![]() Here the kids are showing off their phonemic awareness skills during an Engage New York skills lesson. They are writing CVC words. CVC words are an important part of reading and writing. They are words that are created with the consonant-vowel-consonant sequence for example CAT. Once mastered, young children may progress to more complicated word structures beyond the three letters structure of CVC words. Mastering CVC words and phonemic awareness is essential to becoming a successful reader. KG2C has progressed a lot in both their writing and reading. Just come in and check out our writers wall to see the progress from the start of the year. Keep up the good work at home also with Raz Kids and sight words. Children were excited and engaged while reading and listening to stories. Check out the photos here https://goo.gl/photos/fXN1HDHRQSZWdvca7 We did lots of fun activities such as buddy reading with grade 3, scavenger hunts for cat in the hat, remaking and re-telling the story the little red hen, and visiting the green eggs cafe to listen to a Dr.Seuss story.
