Thanks to all of the parents who were able to come to our Swimming Open House on Tuesday! The kids enjoyed showing off their skills. I was really impressed by the progress that some kids made in such a short amount of time! Way to go Ms. Katia!
Today our Kindergartners investigated how they could use recycled materials to design and build a structure that will reduce the warming effect of sunlight on an area. Sounds challenging doesn't it? Well you would be amazed by the structures that the kids designed and even more amazed by some of the questions I overheard during the building and designing process! We provided each group with a rubber polar bear frozen in a block of ice and asked the children to try to help the polar bear stay frozen for as long as possible. They were then shown all of the available materials and asked to first talk about and sketch out their plan. Then each group selected the materials and began building. Once finished we took all of the finished projects outside and placed them in the direct sunlight. Our control cup (with no shelter) was completely melted within 1 hour- but the most successful group still had ice after over 3 hours outside in the direct sun! Take a look at your engineers in action! Thank you so much to all of the parents who were able to make it to the Student-Led conferences last week.
The kids seemed to really enjoy sharing their portfolios with their parents. This was a great opportunity for you to see some of the progress your children have made in reading and writing and the students also loved showing off some of their skills on the Ipads! Thank you! Welcome back parents and students!
I hope you all had a restful and fun vacation. It was so nice to come back to work to a room full of smiling faces full of new stories to tell. Your vacations sounded amazing- Thailand, Australia, France, Oman...just to name a few! This week we are finishing up our unit on Kings and Queens and completing some assessments before the end of the quarter. The highlight of the week is probably that we are ow starting swimming lessons in PE. Here are a few photos of our first swimming lessons Our countdown to Spring Break included a whirlwind last week of school- KHDA visits, beaver dams, Geometry fun, and a field trip to the Sharjah Aquarium and Maritime Museum! The field trip was a wonderful way to say goodbye before the holidays and a perfect culminating activity for our study of pants and animals. I hope everyone is at home resting up now and will be full of energy for learning when school starts back on April 9th. See you then! We have been learning all about the amazing world of beavers in KG2! Ask your child to describe how this fascinating creature changes the environment in order to create the habitat it needs to survive. They should be able to tell you all about beaver dams and lodges as well as the features that make beavers such great builders!
As a final project the students were asked to design, build, and test their own beaver dams using all natural materials from our local environment. (Thanks to all the parents who collected materials!). This was so much messy, muddy, FUN! A big part of our last two units in Math has been about counting to 100 and number sense. Playing games provides engaging practice for the children to work on improving their number sense and mental math skills.
We were very lucky to have a Grade 5 visitor last week who enjoyed playing subtraction and addition games with our class. For our second KG2 Science Day the students rotated through all 5 KG2 classes to complete 5 different activities relating to our study of Farms and Farm Animals. They investigated wool and feathers, tried their hand at churning butter, designed and built enclosures for farm animals, experimented with buoyancy and density using eggs, |
