Currently in KG2B we are working on Domain 7:Kings and Queens. In this unit students have been listening to read-alouds about kings and queens and royal families. Students have been listening to both fiction and nonfiction selections which will build their understanding of the responsibilities, lifestyle, and customs associated with royalty throughout history. Living in Dubai, it is important students understand how this topic can also be related to the Royal family of Dubai. Students are able to explain who the ruler of Dubai is(His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum), his responsibilities and who his son is ,the crown prince - Sheikh Hamdan. Throughout this unit students are learning new vocabulary words and the concept that many words have more than one meaning. If you are using Raz-kids at home you will see under the "My assignment section" I have assigned students some of the stories we have read in class to reinforce the topic. I know often times when parents ask their children what did you learn in school today, the common answer can be I don't remember. This is very normal, however to help you I have created a few questions you may ask your child to encourage conversation about all the things they learn in class. Describe what a King or Queen does? What does royal mean? What is a kingdom? What is a palace? Are there still Kings and Queens today? What are treasures? What is a crown prince? Who is the crown prince in Dubai? What does it mean to be merry? Can you give me an example? Most of all to help support your child's learning journey I encourage you to take time each night to read books. Reading to your child is the single most important thing you can do to encourage his or her literacy development.
